Before an implant is placed, it is important to access the health of teeth and gums. If there are any signs of gum disease or decay, these must be treated first

Thereafter, your treatment will be planned following x-rays and in some cases a CT to access bone quality and check for nearby anatomical structures to avoid before drilling. The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic, IV sedation is sometimes used if a patient is very anxious.

The gum where the implant is to be placed is cut and lifted and a small hole is drilled in the jawbone at the precise location of the intended implant. The threaded titanium implant is fitted into this socket and the gum is stitched back over the implant. If there is insufficient bone material to accommodate the implant, a bone graft may be required. Once the implant has been placed, it is left to heal and integrate with the jawbone for between six weeks to six months. During this time, a temporary replacement option can be used if desired.

When the implant is fully bonded and secure, an opening will be created in order to place a connector, called an abutment, which enable your restoring dentist to place a crown.

Your restoring dentist will take an impression of the area to create a crown and shortly afterwards the final crown will be placed.
