Initial Appointment

Your first visit will involve a comprehensive periodontal examination to access the health of your gums and teeth. This helps the periodontist to determine your diagnosis and the possible treatment options.

Examinations can also reveal receding gums, exposed roots, tooth grinding and other problem. The examinations includes taking measurements of the spaces between your teeth and gums.

If you have been referred by your dentist, please ensure that you bring:

• The referral form and any x-rays from your referring dentist.
• A list of medications you are currently taking.
• Please notify the periodontist if you have a medical condition of concern prior to surgery.

After the examination, your periodontist will determine what type of gum disease you have and develop a treatment plan. People have different wants and needs. No single treatment is best, whatever treatment you receive, you will be placed in a maintenance program. This will include follow-up examinations and cleanings. These visits will help to keep your mouth and gums healthy. They also help to prevent the disease from getting worse. For a patient who has gingivitis, most periodontics will recommend twice-yearly visits. For patients with more significant problems, the schedule might be on a more regular basis (once every two/three months)

The initial appointment for dental implant patients

The initial appointment in the dental implant process for Sydney Perio patients is a comprehensive consultation with the periodontist during which all possible tooth replacement options will be discussed.

To be a suitable candidate for dental implants, the patient must have sufficient bone in his or her jaw to support the implants. Once it is determined that the patient is a good candidate for dental implants, a detailed treatment plan will be issued to the patient outlining steps and costs of each stage. An appointment is scheduled as recommended.
